Vesna Terselic, director of Documenta Centre for Dealing with the Past, Croatia (tportal.hr)

As part of «Over the Barriers – Europe without Intellectual Bondaries and Limitations» series of lectures (in partnership with Public Diplomacy. EU and Russia cooperation programme)

Lecture by Vesna Terselic (director of Documenta Centre for Dealing with the Past, Croatia) and Nikola Mokrovic (director of archive in Documenta Centre, Croatia) "Memory Work in Croatia and in other post-Yugoslav countries. Challenges and opportunities for cooperation"

Discussions about the causes of dissolution of Yugoslavia and nature of wars that followed in period 1991–2001 remain a very contentious issues in political and social life as well as accepting responsibility and recognition of suffering of victims and survivors and finally creating the prerequisites for establishing a sustainable peace in Croatia and in the other post-Yugoslav countries. Severity and number of these open question show that we as individuals, societies, institutions and states, are still very far away from (re)building trust. On contrary, these issues are being handled not just with scarce rationality and sincerity, but are often (mis)used in political fights. In other words, they are used as instruments of creating new myths. Or, we could say the after ending the wars, with stopping active usage of weaponry for killing and gaining territories, they are still at the heart of political debates and memory struggles. What is the logic of this surplus of history? In our lecture, we will try to give basic overview of the problem in historical and comparative perspective, positive practices which address it, as well as possible solutions, from practice of Documenta-Center for Dealing with the Past and other human rights organizations.

Documenta follows long line of grass-root peace building and human rights initiatives, aiming at challenging denial and persistent public questioning of gross violations of international human rights law and serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the past in Croatia and other post-Yugoslav countries. Convinced that further research and education on crimes committed is needed, hopefully leading to inclusive commemorative culture which will stimulate development of society based on values of tolerance to fellow human beings and zero-tolerance to violence, Documenta started its own activities in 2004.

In order to examine the reasons of polarized/divided collective memory in Croatia and other post-Yugoslav countries, in context of European and global coming to terms with its past, there is need to look at personal memories, as well as institutional remembrance practices and experiences with initiating and sustaining social debate on violent past from beginning of the WWII (1941–1945), through period of political violence in its aftermath (1945 – 1990) to Wars of the 1990's in post-Yugoslav countries (1991 – 2001). Exchange of experiences and common programs in cooperation with organizations from Russia might be very helpful in finding new ways of engaging with individuals, communities and societies of our countries burdened by legacies of war and violence.
