«First to Suffer»: An exhibition on the beginning of soviet political repressions
1st of December
8 pm–9 pm

To mark the centenary of the 1917 October Revolution Memorial organized an exhibition telling the story of the arrests following 25 October 1917 events and up till 4 January 1918, the date when the Bolsheviks dissolved the Constitutional Assembly. The exhibition portrays lives of fifty people who were the first to fall victims of the Soviet repression. Join the exhibition curator and historians in a discussion reflecting on the practices of the first months of the revolution that paved the way for the development of the Soviet repressive system.

«The Right to Write»: Presenting the book on the intricate path taken by Gulag prisoners’ letters and their families’ strive to keep in touch
2nd of December
7 pm–8 pm

Unique sources have been preserved in family archives that form the basis of the Memorial collection. Emotionally loaded and intellectually stimulating, these are the letters from/to Gulag prisoners, the only remaining way of staying in touch with repression victims. The book, entitled The Right to Write, is the first attempt to study the phenomenon. Indeed, the right to correspond with those on the other side of the fence should never be taken for granted. Writing with no pencil or paper at hand is a challenging task. Putting your message through when you are denied mail access or avoiding censorship is nearly impossible – yet it happened.

Remembering the 20th Century – Families and Schools
3rd of December
1 pm–2 pm

What events of the previous century have been reflected in family memories, in diaries, letters, oral stories? How do those stories correlate with Russian history as taught at schools? How do you approach history discussions in your family or in a a school setting? Those are some of the topics you can discuss with the organizers of the Memorial contest for school students «People and History, 20th century Russia», historical board games authors and the «The War that Wasn’t the Same. WWII in European History Textbooks» exhibition curator.

For children

«Dried and Valid» Exhibition
The Biological museum of Timiryazev with participation from International Memorial presents the «Dried Truth» project, the full version of which is going to be available next year, right now, however, everyone can participate in the discussion. In this project a list from the herbarium is not just a document, a quick photographic shot of nature’s state, but also a witness of historical events. In the nearby cases you will see an example of nature’s community untouched by people and some examples of nature’s aliens, brought by people both willingly and against their will.

Master class «Journey of the Plants»
When we want to go somewhere far far away we get in a car or on a plane, however plants don’t have both legs and a head to understand where they want go. But do you think that it matters? It’s not that simple! At the biological museum of Timiryazev master class you’re going to learn about how fruits got their «hooks» and «parachutes» and how an acorn can swim across the ocean and also why berries are so bright. The master class is going to be led by the head of the botanical department of the Biological museum Elena Mikheeva, a regular guest on the show «Otkryvashka» which airs on «Echo Moskvy».

Role of the grandmother in history
29th of November
6 pm – 7 pm

The interaction of people with the surrounding world occurs not only on the global level of government and communities, but on the level of family and personalities. As a part of the historical research contest «People in HIstory. 20th century Russia» Memorial International invites you to contemplate on the meaning of local history. The participants will distinguish their family history traits while working with historian curators, will learn to pick out and analyze sources for their research, and at the end of the workshop will try to shortly tell about their family history as an ideal subject of a research work.

Join the table! Games about 20th century history
30 th of November
6 pm – 7 pm

The 20th century defined images of modern cities, communities, countries and our perception on the world around us and our place in it. International Memorial invites you to dive in the modern history of the country through table games of 1980’s–2010’s. These games allows you to link various generations and to tell about the past everyday life in an interactive form. The participants change every 30 minutes. The games will be led by historians, culturologists and the creators of the games. Everyone is invited. An exciting experience is guaranteed.
